Perhaps better known as a Rally Sprint, this is the type of event where only the driver has a go at driving around a stage of up to 4 miles in length without the benefit of a navigator. In other words, it is run along the lines of a Sprint but can take place on mixed surfaces as opposed to tarmac only. The route is arrowed exactly the same as for a full blooded stage event.
Usually the start and finish are near to each other. Cars start at between 30 and 60 second intervals.
There is at least one practise run followed by between 3 and 5 Timed Runs during the course of the day. Results can be based on fastest time or cumulative time. The Clerk of the Course can authorise re-runs if an ‘incident’ prevents a competitor from completing a run. However this does not mean that the normal ‘force majeure’ ruling cannot also be applied; it is down to the decision of the Clerk of the Course.
All cars have to comply with the current 2010 MSA General Regulations - Section R which therefore restricts competitors to cars complying with all the relevant special stage technical regulations. One dispensation is that cars can be double driven providing the correct competition licence is held by the drivers concerned.
Entry fees are normally around £90 or less and for this a driver can have a good day of motor sport with about 20 miles of ’rallying-sprinting’. Great fun.
Champion Co-driver sponsors new award for Weston Rallysprint.
Former BRC Challenge and ASWMC Champion co-driver Glyn Thomas has
announced a new award for the inaugural Weston
Rallysprint to be held on Sunday the 31st of January.
"I'm pleased to announce the 'GT Change Co-drivers Cup' in recognition of
the fact that this event offers the opportunity for teams to double up drivers in their cars. I include myself
as a failed driver turned co-driver, so it would be good to see some fast navigators out there!"
The award will be presented to the fastest competitor who can prove he/she co-drove on a stage rally during the
2008 or 2009 seasons.
"I hope that this will inject further interest in the Rallysprint, that has already attracted fantastic support from local competitors."
An endurance rally originally planned to run in 2008 but cancelled due to date clash, the route and selectifs (stages) are on file an organiser is required to help get this event off the ground. |
